An Old Market Town With Old Drains
Altrincham has held a market since 1290. It grew after the Bridgewater Canal arrived in 1765 and the railway in 1849, then developed largely as a residential town in the 19th century. Ten of Trafford's 21 conservation areas are in Altrincham, including The Downs, The Devisdale, Bowdon, Ashley Heath, Goose Green, the Old Market Place, Stamford New Road and the Linotype Housing Estate in Broadheath.
Victorian villas and terraces
Many 19th-century properties around the town centre and up towards Bowdon have their original clay drains. Over a century or more, joints open up, roots get in, and pipes can drop or crack. Long runs through large gardens add to the risk. In these houses, a drain that blocks repeatedly often has a structural cause, which a camera survey can confirm.
Workers' housing in Broadheath
Broadheath grew as an industrial area, and the Linotype Housing Estate is a reminder of the homes built for its workers. Older houses like these often share drains, so one blockage can reach several homes.
Town-centre businesses
Altrincham's market and its restaurants, cafés and bars produce a lot of kitchen waste. Grease and food debris are the main cause of commercial blockages here. Regular maintenance helps keep them in check.
Altrincham Drain Problems We Clear
- Root-damaged clay drains under mature Bowdon and Hale gardens
- Shared drains blocked behind terraced rows
- Restaurant and café drains clogged with grease
- Blocked toilets, sinks and outside gullies

Altrincham Drain FAQs
Do you cover Bowdon, Hale and Broadheath?
Yes. We cover all of Altrincham's WA14 postcodes and the Hale and Timperley side of WA15.
Our house is in a conservation area. Can the drains still be repaired?
Yes. Clearing and surveying drains don't affect the building. Where a pipe is cracked in one place, a patch repair from inside the pipe can avoid digging up the garden.
Do you work for restaurants in Altrincham?
Yes. Commercial work is quoted on request, from £220 + VAT, and we can advise on grease control.
