How Tree Roots Block Your Drains (and What You Can Do About It)

Tree roots are one of the most common causes of blocked and damaged drains in Stockport. They’re strong, persistent and naturally drawn to water, which makes underground pipes an easy target. Root ingress is especially common in older clay drains, where the joints have weakened over time. Left alone, it can turn a minor blockage into a costly repair.

Why tree roots get into drain pipes

Roots are always looking for water and nutrients. Even a tiny crack or loose joint lets out enough moisture to attract them. Dry summers make it worse, as roots spread further in search of water and force their way into pipes. Roots can travel a surprisingly long way from the tree, so a drain doesn’t have to be right next to a tree to be at risk.

Once inside, roots can:

• Restrict or completely block the flow
• Grow and widen cracks in the pipe
• Push joints apart and, in time, cause the pipe to collapse

How we deal with tree roots

1. CCTV drain survey

The only way to know for sure is to look inside the pipe. A CCTV drain survey shows where the roots are getting in and what condition the pipe is in.

2. High-pressure jetting

For light to moderate growth, high-pressure jetting cuts through the roots and restores the flow.

3. Mechanical root cutting

For thicker, established roots, we use electro-mechanical machines with cutting heads to clear the pipe while protecting the inside of it. Root removal is part of our drain unblocking service, with jetting and machine work at a fixed £150 + VAT. Fixed prices apply Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Evenings, weekends and bank holidays may cost more, and we’ll tell you the rate before we set off.

4. Repair, if needed

Cutting the roots out clears the blockage, but if the crack or open joint they came through isn’t sealed, they’ll grow back. Where the damage is in one spot, a no-dig patch repair can seal it from the inside. We do patch repairs only. Where roots have broken or collapsed the pipe, an excavation and repair may be needed.

Do I always need an excavation?

No. Many cases can be sorted with root cutting and a patch repair. Excavation is only needed where the pipe has collapsed or is badly damaged.

How much does root removal cost?

It depends on how bad the intrusion is. Minor roots may be cleared as part of a standard unblock. More serious cases need a CCTV assessment first, so we can give you an accurate price.
