A manhole cover looks like a simple slab of metal over a hole in the ground. In fact it does an important job, keeping people safe, keeping smells in and protecting your drains. A cracked, rocking or missing manhole lid isn’t just an eyesore. It’s a trip hazard, a way in for rats and debris, and a possible liability if someone gets hurt. Here’s when you need a manhole cover replacement, how to choose the right one, and what the job involves for homes and businesses in Stockport.

What does a manhole cover do?

A manhole cover sits in a frame on top of an inspection chamber, giving access to the drains below. The frame is set into the surrounding concrete, tarmac or paving and carries the weight of anything that passes over it. Together they:

  • Keep people safe by covering an open chamber
  • Keep smells and pests in the drain, and debris out
  • Stop unauthorised access to the drainage system
  • Spread the load of people and vehicles on the surrounding ground

Signs a manhole cover or frame needs replacing

  • Cracks or broken pieces in the cover or frame
  • A cover that rocks, moves or clunks when it’s walked or driven over
  • A cover that doesn’t sit flush with the ground
  • Rust, corrosion or a badly worn surface
  • Water getting into the chamber when it rains
  • Drain smells coming from around the edges
  • A missing or makeshift cover, such as a paving slab or piece of board

Homes and businesses have different needs

Domestic properties

At home, a manhole is usually in the garden, path, driveway or garage. The main concerns are safety for children and pets, a tight-fitting lid that keeps smells in, and easy access for future unblocking or inspection. On a driveway, the cover must be strong enough for cars.

Commercial properties

Car parks, yards and loading areas need much stronger covers that can take vans, lorries or forklifts. Fitting the right load rating matters for safety, and the work needs to be planned to cause as little disruption to the business as possible.

Choosing the right cover and frame

  • Load class. Covers are rated under the British and European standard BS EN 124. Ratings run from A15 for pedestrian areas and gardens, through B125 for footpaths and light car parking, up to D400 for roads, with heavier classes for docks and airfields. Driveways usually need at least B125.
  • Material. Cast or ductile iron is strong and common. Galvanised steel and composite covers are lighter, and composite covers have no scrap value, which helps prevent theft.
  • Shape and size. Round, square or rectangular, matched to the chamber opening.
  • Sealing and locking. Sealed covers help keep smells in. Locking covers are useful where theft or tampering is a risk.
  • Recessed trays. These hold paving or block paving so the cover blends into a patio or drive.

How a manhole cover is replaced

  • Assessment. We check the chamber, measure the opening and agree the right size, load class and type.
  • Making it safe. Barriers or cones go around the work area, which is especially important on busy commercial sites.
  • Removing the old frame. The surrounding surface is broken out and the old cover and frame are lifted out, taking care not to damage the chamber.
  • Setting the new frame. The new frame is bedded level with the surrounding ground in high-strength mortar or concrete. Getting it level matters, as a frame that’s too high or low will rock, clunk and become a trip hazard.
  • Fitting the cover and any seal or lock.
  • Making good. The surrounding concrete, tarmac or paving is reinstated as neatly as possible.

Why not do it yourself?

Heavy covers are awkward and dangerous to lift, and an open chamber is a real hazard. Getting the right load class and setting the frame properly takes experience. A cover that isn’t bedded correctly will soon work loose again. We have the right lifting equipment, and we’re fully insured.
