The gully is the drain at ground level outside your house, usually under the kitchen waste pipe or at the bottom of a downpipe. It’s easy to forget about until it overflows. In Stockport, where heavy rain is common and many homes still have their original drains, a cracked or blocked gully can cause smells, flooding and damp. Here’s what gullies do, the signs yours needs attention and when replacement is the answer.
What is a gully and why does it matter?
A gully is a drainage fitting with a grating on top and a water-filled trap below. It collects waste water from kitchen sinks, washing machines and baths, and rainwater from downpipes and yards. The water in the trap stops drain smells and pests coming back up. From the gully, the water runs into your underground drain.
Many older Stockport homes, such as 1920s and 1930s semis, have a clay gully under the kitchen waste pipe. Over the years these can crack, lose their trap seal or fill with fat.
Signs your gully needs attention
- Water draining slowly or pooling around the gully
- The gully overflowing when the sink empties or when it rains
- Bad smells around the drain outside the back door
- A cracked, broken or missing grating
- Cracks in the gully pot or the concrete around it
- Repeated blockages that come back soon after being cleared
- Damp on the wall next to the gully
Common causes of gully problems
- Fat and food waste from the kitchen sink setting hard in the trap
- Leaves and silt washed off roofs and yards
- Age, as old clay gullies crack and their joints fail
- Roots getting in through cracks and joints
- Ground movement pulling the gully away from the drain
Clear, repair or replace?
A blocked gully can usually be cleared quickly. Our drain unblocking prices are fixed: £75 + VAT for rodding and plunging, and £150 + VAT for jetting. Fixed prices apply Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Evenings, weekends and bank holidays may cost more, and we’ll tell you the rate before we set off. If a gully keeps blocking, smells even when it’s clear or is visibly cracked, replacing it is often the best long-term fix. A camera check of the pipe beyond the gully shows whether the problem goes further. Larger investigations are carried out as a CCTV drain survey.
Gully installation and replacement
When we replace a gully, we break out the old one, fit a new trapped gully with a fresh connection to the drain, and make good the surface around it. Whether it’s a new extension, a moved kitchen or an upgrade to an old system, we’ll make sure it’s laid properly and connected to the right drain. Rainwater and waste water have to go to the correct system. If the pipe beyond the gully is damaged, we can carry out excavation and repairs at the same time.

Just need a new grating?
If only the grid or lid is broken or missing, we can supply a replacement made to size. Send us the measurements on WhatsApp.
Keeping your gully clear
- Scrape fat and food into the bin, not the sink
- Keep the grating clear of leaves
- Don’t sweep soil or debris into the gully
- Get it looked at if it starts to smell or drain slowly
