Wetter winters and heavy summer downpours are leaving more gardens waterlogged and more driveways under water. Older drainage often can’t cope with sudden heavy rain, and more homeowners in Stockport are asking us about land drains. Here’s what they are, when you need one and how we install and look after them.
What is a land drain?
A land drain, often called a French drain, is a perforated pipe laid in a gravel-filled trench below the surface. Water in the surrounding ground seeps into the gravel, enters the pipe through the holes and is carried away to a suitable outlet. Once it’s covered over, you won’t see it, but you’ll notice the difference.
Signs you might need one
- A lawn that stays soggy for days after rain
- Puddles that sit on a patio, path or driveway
- Water running off a slope towards the house
- Damp walls or water collecting around the foundations
- A soakaway that no longer copes
- Moss and boggy patches spreading across the garden
How we design and install land drains
Every garden is different, so we look at the site before quoting. A land drain only works if it’s designed properly:
- Finding the source. Is it rainwater running off hard surfaces, a high water table or water coming off a slope? The answer changes the design.
- The right route and fall. The pipe needs a steady fall so water keeps moving.
- A suitable outlet. The water has to go somewhere: a soakaway, ditch, watercourse or surface water drain. Land drainage usually can’t be connected to the foul sewer.
- The right materials. Correctly sized pipe, clean gravel and, where needed, a membrane to stop soil clogging the system.
Where there’s no lower point for the water to run to, a pumping station can lift it to a suitable discharge point.
Why land drains are worth it
- They’re simple and discreet, hidden below ground
- They protect lawns, paths and foundations from standing water
- They let water soak back into the ground instead of overloading the sewers
- They work for homes, sloping gardens, driveways and commercial sites
Maintenance and repairs
We don’t just install land drains, we look after them too. Over time they can clog with silt or roots, especially after long wet spells. We use CCTV inspection to find where a land drain is blocked or damaged, and high-pressure jetting to clear it, which is far cheaper than digging up the whole run.
