Need drain unblocking in Manchester? The Drain Unblocking Company is a family-run drainage business based at 2 St Margaret's Road, Cheadle, close to the A34 and the M60. We cover south Manchester, north Manchester and the surrounding Greater Manchester towns, from Stockport borough to Trafford, the Wilmslow side of Cheshire and Bolton, but not the M1, M2 or M3 (city centre) postcodes.

Our prices are fixed, so there are no surprises. If it's a simple blockage, we'll treat it as one. If there's a deeper problem, we'll show you on camera and explain your options.

24/7 call-outs

Emergency Drain Unblocking in Manchester

Some blockages can't wait until morning. If a manhole is overflowing in the garden, dirty water is coming back up a downstairs toilet or shower, or the kitchen drain is flooding the yard, call or WhatsApp us whatever the time. We're open 24/7 and we'll tell you when we can get to you.

  • A toilet, shower or bath backing up with dirty water
  • A manhole lifting or overflowing in the garden or drive
  • An outside gully flooding the path or yard
  • Several sinks and plugholes draining slowly at once
  • A strong sewage smell inside or outside the house
  • Water pooling round a drain cover after rain

While you wait: stop running taps, the washing machine and the dishwasher, and don't flush. Please don't pour chemical drain cleaner into a backed-up drain or hire rods yourself. Our guide explains the dangers of DIY drain rods, and these quick checks can help before you call.

Fixed prices apply Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Evenings, weekends and bank holidays may cost more, and we'll tell you the rate before we set off.

South Manchester

Drain Unblocking in South Manchester: M19, M20, M21 and M22

South Manchester is the part of the city closest to our base in Cheadle, just across the Mersey, so these postcodes are some of the quickest for us to reach. The same fixed prices apply: £75 + VAT for rodding and plunging, £150 + VAT for jetting, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

  • M19

Levenshulme and Burnage, where long Victorian and Edwardian terraces often share one drain along the row

  • M20

Didsbury, West Didsbury, Withington and Parrs Wood. See our Didsbury page

  • M21

Chorlton-cum-Hardy and Chorlton Park, with older terraces, semis and plenty of mature trees near the drains

  • M22

Northenden and Wythenshawe, including Sharston and Benchill

Older clay drains in these areas tend to suffer from root ingress and cracked joints, while kitchens on the busy high streets in Levenshulme, Chorlton, Withington and Didsbury send a lot of fat and grease into the drains. Whatever the cause, we'll clear it and, if it keeps coming back, show you why on camera. Call 07375 521027 or WhatsApp us to check your postcode.

What we do

We also install and repair Saniflo macerators, replace broken manhole covers and gullies, and offer drainage maintenance agreements for businesses and landlords. See all our drainage services.

Common problems

Why Drains Block in Manchester

Most of the blocked drains we clear across Manchester come down to a handful of causes. Knowing which one you've got helps us pick the right method first time.

  • Wet wipes, nappies and sanitary items flushed down the toilet
  • Fat, oil and grease from kitchens, especially takeaways and restaurants
  • Tree roots getting into older clay pipes through the joints
  • Scale and debris built up inside old cast-iron and clay pipework
  • Shared drains on terraced streets, where one blockage affects the whole row
  • Leaves, silt and grit washed into gullies after heavy rain

If the same drain keeps blocking, there's usually a reason: a root, a cracked pipe or a dip in the line. We'll use the camera to find it rather than guess. Read more about tree roots in drains and why heavy rain causes blockages.

Who Owns the Drain?

Across Greater Manchester, the water company is United Utilities. Since October 2011, most shared drains and lateral drains have been the water company's responsibility. The pipe serving only your property, within your boundary, is usually yours.

This matters most on older terraced streets in places like Reddish, Edgeley and Bolton, where one drain often serves a row of houses. If the blockage is in a public sewer, we'll tell you so you can report it to United Utilities. Our guide to blocked sewers and who is responsible explains more.

Our methods

How We Unblock Drains in Manchester

Rodding and plunging

For soft or localised blockages, such as wipes or paper in a toilet or a gully full of silt. It's usually the quickest and cheapest fix.

High-pressure jetting

For fat, scale, roots and stubborn debris. The jet scours the pipe walls so the drain runs freely, not just past the blockage.

CCTV camera check

Once the drain is clear, we can run a camera through it to check for damage. The camera check is free with every unblock where applicable. A written report is £80 + VAT.

Repairs, only if needed

If the camera shows a crack or an open joint, a no-dig patch repair may fix it. For a collapsed pipe, we'll explain the excavation options. We do patch repairs only, not full relining.
